Good gastroenterologists can keep you in peak health if they know what is bothering you, but intestinal issues can sometimes be difficult to talk openly about when your doctor is of the opposite sex.
“Women are more likely to see a gastroenterologist for symptoms but less likely than men to get screened for colon cancer,” said Dr. Lori A. Robbins with Palmetto Digestive Health Specialists. Studies show that women prefer to see female endoscopists, and Palmetto Digestive is proud to say that it now has two female providers with the addition of Dr. Haily Vora. Only about 13% to 15% of practicing gastroenterologists are women.
According to the World Health Organization, colon cancer as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Colonoscopies are the best diagnostic tool and preventive procedure that can reduce the risk of colon cancer by as much as 85% to 90%. Dr. Vora plans to focus on this imperative preventive screening and her extensive experience in the impact of metabolic health on disorders of the GI tract and liver.
After finishing her residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Vora completed her gastroenterology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Florida before making a home back in Charleston at Palmetto Digestive.
“I am thrilled to return to the community my family calls home and join Palmetto GI,” said Dr. Vora, who is still new to the practice but familiar with the Charleston area.
