When most people think of The Village at Summerville, they picture a picturesque senior community with lovely homes, ponds, fountains and trees and, of course, lots of amenities for residents. They also see active people riding bicycles, walking and swimming.

There are times when people need skilled care to recover from injuries or health events. Residents certainly have access to the top-notch care, but everyone deserves health care, and The Village at Summerville’s short-term Medicare-certified rehabilitation care is open to residents and nonresidents alike.

“We accept new patients in our short-term rehabilitation,” said Anne Morefield, admissions case manager for the Village at Summerville. “Inpatient rehabilitation helps prevent rehospitalization.”

The Village’s short-term rehabilitation and post-acute-care program focuses on getting patients functioning and independent so they can return home as quickly as possible. An interdisciplinary team of professionals designs a care plan customized to the patient’s needs. Services include:

  • Therapy coverage available seven days a week.
  • Personal therapy evaluation in the first 24 hours of admission.
  • Physician-driven weekly interdisciplinary rounds.
  • 24/7 nursing services.
  • Case management services, prior to, during and post-discharge admission.
  • Wellness and life enrichment programming.
  • Chaplaincy services.
  • Scheduled routine follow-up during the first 90 days post discharge.

“The therapy team works to help patients reclaim their independence,” Morefield said. “They work hard to get patients home as quickly as possible.”

The Kathy Ligon health care center is relatively new – it opened in 2018. The short-term rehabilitation side offers 40 private rooms and two shared suites. The center also has a huge therapy gym that patients enjoy. During their stay, patients may engage in a variety of social programs as well.

“A lot of people enjoy their therapy and continue with our outpatient therapy program,” said Morefield.

For patients who need more than short-term care, The Village at Summerville also offers long-term skilled nursing care. The personalized care gives patients input on how they spend their days in a peaceful setting. The base level care includes:

  • 24/7 nursing services.
  • Medication management.
  • Three meals daily, including snacks.
  • Basic cable TV service.
  • All utilities except telephone and internet.
  • Housekeeping.
  • Linen service.
  • Personal laundry.
  • Maintenance.
  • Chaplaincy services.
  • RN unit managers.
  • Emergency response system.
  • Planned personalized life enrichment and wellness activities.
  • Scheduled transportation to primary care physician.

With the short-term rehabilitation, there is often availability because patients recover and return home. There may be availability for the long-term skilled program, which also offers 40 private rooms and two shared suites.

The Village at Summerville is one of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina’s not for profit senior living communities for people 62 and older. It is close to Interstate 26 and about 30 minutes from downtown Charleston.
