Holiday magic at Bishop Gadsden

By Tess Farmer

The holidays have a way of reminding us what matters most: connection, tradition and the joy of being together. At Bishop Gadsden, a Life Plan Community on James Island, just minutes from downtown Charleston, those values come to life through a season filled with twinkling lights, treasured traditions and opportunities for residents, families, staff and volunteers to celebrate as one community.

“Fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness is at the heart of what we do,” says Elizabeth Stevens, vice president for mission and communications at Bishop Gadsden.

“The holidays give us so many wonderful opportunities to bring people together, share traditions and create meaningful moments with one another.”

Holiday Traditions at Bishop Gadsden

One of the most visible signs of the season is the collection of 17 decorated holiday trees displayed throughout the community. Each area brings its own personality to the tradition, with residents, staff and volunteers collaborating to create festive displays. New residents in the apartment and cottage neighborhoods can contribute ornaments of their own, sharing the stories and memories behind them as they help decorate.

The trees also become part of everyday life. In memory care, decorating offers a familiar, engaging activity that encourages participation and connection. Therapists incorporate the trees into therapeutic programming, demonstrating how holiday traditions can support meaningful engagement. Across the community, volunteers lend their time and creativity, often building relationships that extend well beyond the decorations.

Outside, Bishop Gadsden’s grounds crew takes pride in transforming the property with thousands of lights. The dazzling display offers a festive welcome to residents and the public alike, serving as a sparkling prelude to the beloved Charleston County Parks Festival of Lights.

Inside, the season is equally lively. Singing groups visit throughout the holidays, families gather around the table for Thanksgiving in Bishop Gadsden’s farm-to-table-style restaurant, and residents come together to sing carols in the healthcare neighborhood, ensuring that the spirit of the season reaches every corner of the community.

Yet the merriment reflects something deeper than a calendar of holiday events. Residents have opportunities to serve one another, volunteer and contribute their talents throughout the year. These everyday acts of generosity foster purpose, strengthen friendships and create a culture in which everyone has something meaningful to give.

“The holidays are a beautiful expression of the community we strive to nurture every day,” Stevens says. “It’s about making sure people feel seen, included and connected.”

For seniors seeking a fulfilling lifestyle in the Charleston area, Bishop Gadsden offers more than festive celebrations. It offers a place where traditions are shared, new memories take root and the greatest gift of all, a genuine sense of community continues throughout the year.
