How to have a healthy mind and body is an age-old question. As medical technology advances, it can be difficult to keep up with what’s good and not so good for our bodies. The current theory, that is usually not debated, is that a healthy diet and exercise routine are recommended. As we age, our bodies develop differently, and paying closer attention to them becomes ever so important. One used to think that a bruise received while gardening or some back pain that won’t go away was commonplace and unavoidable. It’s probably nothing, but you never know.
Without raising any red flags, or worrying our readers, we are here to stipulate that although our bodies can heal and bounce back, we must be careful and pay close attention when things don’t seem to be getting better as quickly as they should. What we need to do is find an expert and ask the right questions to get the correct answers.
Dr. Andrew McMarlin brings almost 25 years of experience to the table. A highly competitive Olympic-trials winner and an award-winning orthopedist, Dr. McMarlin and his team look forward to each challenge and look at each patient individually – then prepare a proper course of action.
There is a new addition to Dr. McMarlin’s sports medicine team. Dr. Jana Upshaw, who has 18 years of pediatric emergency experience, recently completed a nonsurgical Sports Medicine/Orthopedics fellowship in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The practice prides itself on thoroughly evaluating patients from start to finish. Dr. Upshaw’s experience is immeasurable as she assists in evaluating each patient. Sports injuries and those caused by automobile accidents might or might not be something to worry about, but they must be attended to swiftly for a proper diagnosis and a positive outcome.
“Since Dr. Upshaw has joined the practice, we’ve been able to move at such a quicker pace without sacrificing the bedside manner we are known for,” said Dr. McMarlin. “We have patients coming from as far away as Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head for evaluations and treatments ranging from PRP for arthritis to the latest scientific, research-based management of concussions.”
The practice offers same-day scheduling for fractures, concussions, arthritis and gout flares and other body ailments. That’s vitally important when a patient has an uncomfortable situation that needs immediate attention.
“I have a 90-year-old patient who is an avid tennis player who has painful arthritis in his feet. Every five to six months, he comes down to see me to get his big toe injected. We take pride here in using our experience and ultrasound guidance to give a very safe and reasonably pain-free injection. He drives all the way down from Columbia. I think when someone’s had a painful injection or two, they’re willing to make a much bigger effort to get better care,” Dr. McMarlin said.
Dr. McMarlin is a staunch supporter of diet and exercise. Throughout a person’s life, there will always be unavoidable hiccups to the body that need attention and care. However, if people pay close attention to their bodies and make a concerted effort to maintain and monitor their health, the benefits will be generational.
