For Evelyn Carter, building a strong reputation requires hard work, perseverance and unwavering faith in God. Carter, the CEO of Palmetto Digestive, worked her way up to the leadership position, launching into health care first as a nurse.

“My parents instilled in my siblings and me the values of diligence, resilience and humility from a young age,” she said. “Early in my career, I was fortunate to have Eren Bracewell, one of my former managers, who recognized my potential and believed in me during times of self-doubt. I will always be grateful for her support.”

Being honored in the Women in Health issue offered Carter the chance to share a truth that matters to her: “It’s important to acknowledge that many senior executive roles are still predominantly held by men, and some workplaces may hesitate to embrace a woman in leadership.”

With over 30 years of experience in the medical field, Carter has appreciated the privilege of immersing herself in various roles. “Before my current position, I devoted 14 years to vascular practice,” she said.

Although her dream had always been to run a hospital or lead an academic institution, she has “found tremendous fulfillment” in her role at Palmetto Digestive over the past year-and-a-half.

Match With These Providers

“I consider myself a hands-on manager, and I truly believe that understanding my team’s processes is essential for helping them improve their work,” she explained. “I encourage an open-door policy, welcoming my team to come to me with any challenges they face.”

Carter sees almost every opportunity as an opportunity to mentor. Even during casual encounters, like meeting someone who provides exceptional customer service at the grocery store, she takes the initiative to connect with them.

“I share my contact information to help them explore educational opportunities,” she said. “Giving back to young people is incredibly fulfilling, just as someone once reached out to me when I needed guidance.”

Carter said she will forever appreciate being able to “work alongside innovative and compassionate providers who genuinely prioritize patient care.”

“We have an outstanding team,” she added. “And I am truly thankful for the trust placed in me and the chance to collaborate with such talented professionals. I eagerly look forward to what the future holds.”
