For more than 20 years, Michelle Chandler has worked with founder and physician Dr. Edmund Rhett to grow Rhett Women’s Center to its current multiprovider, comprehensive women’s hub.
Chandler is the proud manager of the center, a place “where women learn to ask the right questions about their health as well as a place where they are heard,” she explained.
Chandler’s passion for women’s health sparked during her formative years. Her aunt, Janet, lived with the family, partly because she suffered from a mental disability but eventually because she was diagnosed with colon cancer that took her life at age 47. “Walking through that journey at that young age influenced everything about my career and how I see the world,” she recounted.
Thanks to her aunt’s doctor, Dr. John William Campbell, Chandler learned early on to regard doctors as good people who set standards. “I grew up in a small Midwest town, and back then hospitals didn’t allow kids to stay,” Chandler recalled. “Dr. Campbell let me stay. He made sure I had meals, so I didn’t have to leave her side. He also paid for my aunt’s funeral.”
Just as Chandler drew inspiration from Dr. Campbell when she was younger, she now looks to Dr. Rhett and colleague Dr. David Smith for motivation. “You can’t work with Dr. Rhett for 30 years and not draw inspiration,” she said. “What he does is nothing short of what Dr. Campbell did. Both Dr. Rhett and Dr. Smith are generous and very passionate about women’s health. We all understand how women tick at the varying stages of their lives. We love helping them understand more, too.”
Chandler enjoys even the more mundane, everyday aspects of her job. Whether it’s an audit, an inspection or an accreditation review, Chandler welcomes the work. “When you and your team strive to always do things right, audits and inspections are more easily welcomed,” she explained.
