New technology and senior living don’t often go hand-in-hand, nor do fresh-from-college hires and milestone projects, but Reganne Nowell is a bridge builder. When her department head took a chance on her to spearhead the new BGLife app at Bishop Gadsden, the senior communications specialist found positives in her fresh perspective and used her patience and creative abilities to her advantage to better connect generations, residents, their families and employees to build an even stronger community.
Acting as liaison between Bishop Gadsden and app developer Blue Ion, Nowell represented a host of groups with varying needs and abilities to help create a functional, intuitive and user-friendly community engagement app. “The process required an immense amount of work and collaboration. I was honored to take the lead and work on such an important project, and I dove right in,” she grinned. “I am so proud to be part of a field where impactful communication can shape meaningful experiences, especially for such a vibrant and inspiring population.”
One of the biggest challenges Nowell faced when helping create the app was to bring a technology-forward mind-set to a more traditional generation and industry. “Many residents only began using technology later in life, which brings a mixture of curiosity and frustration. I always try to meet them with respect and understanding, knowing some are comfortable operating their devices while others need a bit more guidance,” she explained. “Our residents have busy lives – from traveling to family visits to general life changes. Recognizing this bigger picture helps me approach every interaction thoughtfully, leading to better outcomes and stronger relationships.”
For other women entering the communications field, Nowell recommends building meaningful connections and finding mentors that you admire and whose leadership style resonates with you. She has found this in her department at Bishop Gadsden and is grateful for the guidance and constant encouragement to think bigger. “If you’re given an opportunity, it’s because someone saw your potential and had their full confidence in you. Take that chance and show them – and yourself – why you were the right choice,” she said. “I am lucky enough to work in an organization with a leadership made predominantly of women, which helps me aspire to reach the same level as them and imitate the phenomenal work they do.”
Nowell never anticipated working in the senior living field, but, in her budding career, she has found a deep appreciation for the people she works with and works for and has developed a deeper appreciation for her role in enhancing many avenues of communication. “I get to bring technology to a population that isn’t usually associated with it,” she smiled. “I’ve seen firsthand how technology can transform communication and engagement across all ages. While it requires a lot of creative problem-solving and listening to all the various stakeholders, it’s incredibly fulfilling to help residents navigate and embrace new technology that will enhance their connection to Bishop Gadsden.”
