Lowcountry Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is a Charleston pillar for a reason, as evidenced by winning three HealthLinks Best in Health awards including best orthopaedic practice; best after-hours urgent care and best neurosurgeon for Dr. Sabino D’Agostino.
Founded by Joel R. Cox, Jr. in 1975, the practice specializes in orthopaedic surgery and pain management in the Charleston area.
Lowcountry Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jane Ellis praised her team of physicians, who are trained to diagnose and treat all conditions related to sports injuries, the hip, knee, spine, hand, foot and ankle.
“What truly sets Lowcountry Orthopaedics apart is our patient-first culture combined with a commitment to innovation and teamwork. We are fortunate to have highly-skilled physicians and an incredible support staff who genuinely care about every patient who walks through our doors,” Ellis said.
The business has five different locations, making convenience a priority for patients, including in Charleston, North Charleston, Ladson and two in Summerville.
Ellis said their focus is not only on providing outstanding clinical outcomes, but also on creating a compassionate, efficient and personalized experience from the first appointment through recovery.
Continuously investing in technology, training and operational excellence lets patients receive the highest level of orthopaedic care close to home.
Through its surgery center, Lowcountry Orthopaedic also offers BEAR implant ACL restoration, knee replacement with 3D printing and even Mako robotic-assisted joint replacement.
“Winning a HealthLinks Best in Health award is truly an honor and something our entire organization takes great pride in. Recognition like this reflects the dedication, professionalism and compassion of our entire team. Healthcare is a collaborative effort and awards like this validate the hard work that happens behind the scenes every day to provide exceptional patient care. More importantly, it reinforces the trust our community places in us, and that is something we never take for granted,” Ellis said.
With a phrase stating “Walk-ins or limpins welcome” on its website, the practice also offers what’s called Ortho After Hours at its North Charleston location. Ortho After Hours provides rapid orthopaedic injury diagnosis and treatment for fractures, dislocations, sprains and lacerations. Whether you have just experienced a sudden sports injury or simply have not had time in your busy schedule to see an orthopaedic specialist during regular business hours – the Lowcountry Orthopaedics team can help. This service is available Monday – Thursday from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Recognizing that injuries can be life-altering, Ellis said orthopaedics initially stood out to her as a career because of the tangible impact it has on patients’ quality of life.
For those just starting in their careers in orthopaedics, she recommends staying curious, adaptable and never losing sight of the human side of healthcare.
“What motivates me most is knowing that the work we do positively impacts people’s lives every single day. Whether it’s helping a patient return to work, get back on the golf course, or simply live without pain, there is tremendous purpose behind what we do,” Ellis added.
