Why Sunscreen Is Essential for Outdoor Fun

Whether enjoying a day on the boat, golf course or at the beach, there’s always a reason to get outside and bask in the beautiful Lowcountry weather. Before the fun in the sun begins, however, remember to apply and pack sunscreen to avoid ruining a perfect summer experience.

Along with preventing a painful and unsightly sunburn, sunscreen can thwart the cosmetic effects of skin damage such as wrinkles, discoloration and sagging that are caused by harmful radiation.

SPF 30 and Sun Safety for All Ages

Applying a coat of sunscreen of at least 30 SPF shields bare skin from attack by the sun’s UV rays, according to Carleigh Newman, PA-C, physician assistant at Charleston Dermatology. She said regular SPF application is highly advised for people of all ages, with the exception of babies and toddlers younger than 6 months old. Their sensitive skin is at higher risk of irritation from the sunscreen. Instead, parents should protect their young children’s skin with light, tightly woven clothing along with a large brim hat. These same precautions are effective for people of all ages.

Don’t Skip Sunscreen on Cloudy Days

Sunscreen is for more than just sunny days, Newman added. “If you’re heading outside for an extended period of time, SPF protection should always be applied,” she said. “Although you may feel protected in cool or cloudy weather, you’ll still want to apply your SPF, which will protect your skin from harmful UV radiation that can penetrate cloud coverage. In some cases, the sun’s rays may be even stronger because of how it reflects through the clouds.”

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

Further, because not all sunscreens are created equal, Newman advised that knowing what to look for regarding SPF can be lifesaving. She suggested choosing sunscreens that are “broad spectrum” to guard against UVA and UVB rays because mineral sunscreens work best by creating a physical barrier. Additionally, she recommended opting for sunscreens that are at least SPF 30+. “Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outdoors for extended periods. Look for water-resistant sunscreens, especially if you are swimming or a heavy sweater. Remember to reapply sunscreen about every two hours,” she said.

After-Sun Care and Hydration

Throughout the day, it’s also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, which is essential when the harsh heat and sun are actively drying the skin out, Newman said.

She continued, “After spending time in the sun, cool down and soothe skin with a cool shower or cold compress, which helps calm overheated skin while reducing inflammation. Applying soothing products like a moisturizer containing ceramide to sun-exposed areas can also provide relief.”
