Keeping the mind, body and soul actively engaged as we age is one of the keys to a healthier, more fulfilled life. For seniors, a lifestyle that fosters these values can make a significant impact on mental and physical health. At The Willows of Easley, we create a culture that encourages these focal points – a recipe for senior success – to keep our residents strong, sharp and social.
“These values are part of our community’s culture. Spiritually, physically and mentally, we create an environment to keep our residents engaged and exposed to those important things in life which people find joy and a sense of fulfillment in doing,” smiled Laura Spearman, Executive Director at The Willows of Easley.
Through The Willows’ Vibrant Living Program, there are many opportunities for residents to become involved. Events are geared to strengthen the four guiding pillars: purpose, curiosity, creativity and fun.
Classes like Fit Chi, strength training and balance are geared toward staying strong. Bridge group, lunch-and-learns about faraway places, and art therapy lend themselves to keeping the mind sharp. Staying social is easy with opportunities like the gardening or walking clubs and the League of Men lunch group.
But these classes are more than what they seem and check many more than just the boxes of ‘strong,’ ‘sharp,’ or ‘social.’ The benefits of attending them extend much farther; the friendships forged, the satisfaction of learning and accomplishing things, or simply the act of getting up and being part of something can have positive effects on brain health, movement and social wellness.
Schedule TourSpearmen added that even for residents who choose not to take part in many classes, the benefits still exist organically throughout The Willows of Easley. In assisted living, the staff helps daily with wellness. “Often when seniors still live at home, they might not be taking their medications on time or as often, but here, our staff keeps them on track,” Spearman said. “In other situations, family members may not check on their loved ones but once a day or even once a week. We check in on our residents regularly and are available to help them. We often see improvement after they move in simply by having extra sets of eyes on our residents.”
The social aspect of what we do at The Willows is also important. “Many residents come from living alone at home or with an adult child. Here, they find people with similar life experiences. They have daily interactions with people at the same stage of life and look forward to socializing with their friends and going to dinner,” Spearman said.
Nutritious meals are another key component in the formula for staying strong, sharp and social. At The Willows of Easley, a registered dietitian signs off on all meals, ensuring the chef-inspired fare incorporates a balance of vegetables, fiber and healthy fats. Short order items are also available.
Overall, The Willows of Easley creates a community that cultivates opportunities for residents to stay sharp, stay strong and stay social. Whether they choose to be actively involved in workouts, classes and groups, or if they gain these benefits through simply being around others in a positive and friendly environment, the impactful health benefits are crucial.
“Everyone needs a sense of purpose – at every stage of life, but especially seniors,” Spearman said. “Our residents feel that every day through creative crafts and classes, or even just walking down the hall and smiling and making someone’s day. It makes all the difference.”
