Please share advice you would give as a mentor to women new to the health field.
Choose a path that aligns with your interests but also consider what you want your day-to-day life to look like. As technology becomes increasingly integrated into health care, it’s our responsibility to learn how to leverage it to our advantage while maintaining the value of human intelligence and interpersonal relationships. Lastly, staying informed with the most up-to-date information and surrounding yourself with trusted colleagues are invaluable when encountering difficult clinical situations.
What routines and habits help you prepare for, or recover from, a day’s challenges?
Maintaining wellness routines – such as regular exercise, time for reflection, adequate sleep and intentional breaks from screens – is important in order to show up ready to care for others. A strong support system of family and friends also is valuable.
If you could change one thing about health care, what would it be?
It would be the overwhelming amount of time and effort spent on documentation and the extensive back-office work required to secure insurance approvals for necessary medications and procedures. Redirecting those resources toward direct patient care – rather than navigating administrative hurdles – transforms the health care experience both for providers and patients.
