What is A Dentist?

Dentists specialize in the prevention of diseases and the treatment of conditions of the teeth or inside the mouth. They promote oral health and encourage people to have a check-up at a dentist office or dental clinic an average of every six months. Dentists can start seeing patients as young as age one, or when the first teeth start to appear. Family dentistry or pediatric dental visits are encouraged to begin at an early age to teach healthy oral care.

What is an Endodotist?

The inside of the mouth and soft tissue around the teeth are cared for by a special dentist call the endodontist. If a regular dentist is not able to treat a particular tooth, they will refer the patient to an endodontist who specializes in pinpointing pain and navigating the intricate network of nerves in the mouth.

SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT?

In order to treat the painful tooth, an endodontist will sometimes need to perform a rootcanal (root canal?? – GHC). Replanting teeth is another specialty that falls under the endodontist in treating painful teeth issues. Many times, the dental tissue is damaged due to trauma and the endodontist will have to treat the tissue with endodontic therapy in order to save the cracked tooth.

What is an oral surgeon?

Oral Surgeons also specialize in maxillofacial surgery and commonly referred to as oral and maxillofacial surgeons. These doctors specialize in treating issues affecting the head, neck, face, jaws and the tissues of the mouth. Oral surgeons specialize in dentistry and surgery. Oral surgeons commonly remove wisdom teeth or other impacted teeth. They also surgically anchor dental implants due to tooth loss. Unequal jaw growth, improving the fit of dentures, TMJ disorders, fractured jaws, biopsies, cleft palates and facial infections are also problems that oral surgeons can treat.

SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT needing oral surgery?

Impacted teeth, most commonly wisdom teeth, must be removed by an oral surgeon due to the fact that swelling, pain, and infection of the gum tissue can result. Surgery is helpful for unequal jaw growth and TMJ disorders due to the pain that can ensue if not treated.

What is an orthodontist?

Orthodontists study orthodontics, which is a specialty field of dentistry. Orthodontists primarily deal with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontists are experts in fitting braces and clear aligners to set a patient’s teeth. They work to restructure the face in order to fix improper bites or crooked teeth. Orthodontists have special training in dental school after they graduated in dentistry.

SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT of malpositioned teeth?

Patients who see orthodontists have characteristics of malpositioned teeth and jaws. Treatment comes in the form braces, clear aligners and retainers. These oral devices help to move teeth and jaw bones to a more correct position and refined occlusion. After a treatment of braces or clear alignment device, orthodontists often prescribe retainers to wear part-time or full-time, usually at night. In severe malocclusions, a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery will be necessary.

What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric Dentists are age-appropriate dentists who specialize in the oral health care needs of children from birth until about 18 years old. They undergo course work in dental school that focuses on the special needs of children. They work closely with pediatricians and general dentists who may refer patients to them for their specialized dental treatment training.

What does a Pediatric Dentist Treat?

A pediatric dentist will treat children with unique developmental issues and children who need pediatric dental care in the hospital setting. They are trained to work with children who have more severe dental needs and emergencies. They are also specially trained to treat numerous orthodontic teeth-straightening methods. They are the first to teach children about the importance of oral care so that they can develop good habits throughout their lifetime.

What Is a Periodontist?

Periodontists specialize in the treatment, prevention and diagnosis of periodontal disease. They are dentists who are experts in dental implants and in the treatment of oral inflammation. They must undergo three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are trained in diagnosing specific periodontal disease and in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT that Periodontists treat?

While a regular dentist can take care of most oral issues, the periodontist must step in when there is more of a problematic periodontal case, such as severe gum disease. They will try a number of different treatments including root planning and root surface debridgement. They can perform surgery on severe gum disease patients and are specifically trained to install dental implants. They are particularly interested in measuring the teeth and gums to determine the depth of the spaces. Those measurements help determine what action the periodontist should take.
