While a regular dentist can take care of most oral issues, the periodontist must step in when there is more of a problematic periodontal case, such as severe gum disease. They will try a number of different treatments including root planning and root surface debridgement. They can perform surgery on severe gum disease patients and are specifically trained to install dental implants. They are particularly interested in measuring the teeth and gums to determine the depth of the spaces. Those measurements help determine what action the periodontist should take.
