Advancing Orthopedic Care in Charleston

As an answer to a growing demand for orthopedic care, Charleston Sports Medicine is utilizing newer technologies and less-invasive surgeries to provide high-quality care. Founded in 2006 by Dr. Bright McConnell, the practice focuses on diagnostic specificity and rehabilitation for its clients.

From Training to Charleston

Dr. McConnell attended the University of Florida, where he worked a traveling rotation in Europe during his last year of orthopedic residency, then moved to Los Angeles to complete a one-year sports medicine fellowship at the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. He relocated to Charleston in 1985 and joined Charleston Orthopedic Associates, where he worked for nearly 20 years. During that time, the practice evolved into a larger group — Orthopedic Specialists of Charleston.

Exploring Regenerative Medicine

At one point, Dr. McConnell took an interest in regenerative medicine and studied the use of orthobiologics — a class of medications derived from living organisms such as proteins, cells or tissues. These treatments are designed to target components of the immune system or other biological pathways involved in disease development. This targeted approach can help prevent the onset or worsening of conditions such as autoimmune diseases, allergies and certain infections.

Following the adoption of orthobiologics into his treatment options, Dr. McConnell started a business called PreveCare in 2003, which provided a number of treatments outside the realm of orthopedics. He ultimately closed it in 2006 to found Charleston Sports Medicine.

“This meant I went from a practice of 14 employees down to just one – myself,” Dr. McConnell laughed. “But at this point, I have more employees than just me. Running my own business has allowed me to focus on finding the best and newest technologies and concentrate on less invasive surgeries for musculoskeletal conditions.”

Innovation with Integrity

Although he describes himself as an early adopter of innovative technology, Dr. McConnell stressed that everything Charleston Sports Medicine does is FDA-approved and only utilized after significant evidence-based research is conducted.

Match With These Providers

At 72, Dr. McConnell has seen a significant number of advances in exercise science technology within the last decade. “Because of the background I have as a surgeon, I can confidently answer questions for my patients about whether or not certain procedures or approaches would be beneficial for them,” he said.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Patient Care

One such technology is Vasper, which was developed by NASA and combines blood-flow restriction with liquid cooling and low-impact exercise to enhance workout benefits while minimizing physical strain. It uses compression cuffs on the arms and legs to reduce blood flow, and its cooling system helps prevent overheating.

Vasper is especially helpful for Charleston Sports Medicine’s patients – many of whom are baby boomers – seeking reduced inflammation and accelerated recovery. “The boomers are wanting to live longer, fuller, healthier lives, and we can help them do that,” Dr. McConnell added.

Many of his patients return for his services, whether it be joint lubrication injections, physical therapy or occupational therapy. Many older patients seek options other than joint replacement. Charleston Sports Medicine utilizes multiwave locked system laser therapy, shock wave therapy and extracorporeal magnetotransduction therapies to address these needs.

Team-Based Expertise

If Dr. McConnell isn’t available, Dr. Eric Friedman, a board-certified sports medicine doctor with a background in emergency medical care, is on staff and can help with everything from orthobiologics to ultrasounds.
